The bond order of O2+ is 2.5.

  • 02+ contains 15 electrons.
  • Electronic configuration of 02+ according to MOT = ¶1s²¶*1s2 ¶2s² ¶*2s² ¶2pz² п2рx² = п2ру² п*2рx1 = п*2рy.
  • O2+ is paramagnetic due to the presence of one unpaired electron in anti-bonding orbital π*2px.
  • Bond order is calculated by
  •  \frac{nb - na}{2}
  • Here, nb is several electrons in the bonding molecular orbit while na is the antibonding molecular orbit.
  • Now,
  •  \frac{10 - 5}{2}  =  \frac{5}{2}  = 2.5
