O2 and F2 is an execption so their Z shell is down because of low energy level.but in other molecules like N2,H2 etc. The z shell is in higher level than pie2pxy because in other their energy level is more.
Thank you

DarkFrost: Bond order is 1 because their formula is total bonding electron - total antibonding electron /2 so lower shell which do not contain asterick(*) is bonding shell and other which contain * is antibonding. I make diagram for only two shell it donot affect bond order.

Molecular orbital diagram and bond order of fluorine molecule (F_2)

  • Fluorine molecule is formed by the combination of atomic orbitals of two fluorine atoms, each having nine electrons, thus making 18 electrons.
  • These 18 electrons are filled in various molecular orbitals, in the increasing order of their energies (aufbau principle) and on the basis of Hund's rule and Pauli's exclusion principle as shown in the attachment.
  • The ground state electron configuration of F_2 molecules is:

F_2[KK(\sigma_{2s})^2(\sigma^*_{2s})^2(\sigma_{2p_z})^2(\pi_{2p_x})^2] = (\pi_{2p_y})^2(\pi^*_{2p_x})^2 = (\pi^*_{2p_y})^2

Bond order = \frac{1}{2}[N_b-N_a]= \frac{1}{2}[8-6]=1

  • The bond order of fluorine molecule is identified as 1.
