British called it sepoy mutiny as it started with a few sepoys revolting against the enfield rifle.
Indians called it the first war of independence as it was the first attempt a major part of India, United, made to gain independence from the Britishers.
Hope it helps you.

by the mid nineteenth century, the british had established themselves as the supreme political power in india. the causes of this uprising included the greased catridges incident. It was a revolt by the indian soldiers against the british. It was named Sepoy mutiny by the british as they wanted to downplay the nature of the revolt of 1857. Also, it was the first step to independence of india or the first struggle for india. The mutiny, that is, rebellion was an unsuccessful revolt.
