.Diborane is an electron-deficient molecule which does not have enough valence electrons to form a separate two-electron bond between each pair of bonded atoms. ... Instead diborane adopts a bridged structure of D2h symmetry containing four terminal and two bridging hydrogen atoms.

Electron deficient bond in Diborane

Explanation:

Electron deficiency

When atoms or molecules having less than the number of electrons required for maximum stability

, known as elecron deficiency.

Electron deficienct bond

When a Molecules has  less than two valence electrons per bond is known as electron deficient bond.

Example:

1.Trigonal trihydrogen cation

2.Diborane

3.Berilliumchloride

Now look at the example of diborane molecule:

Diborane(B₂H₆) is the chemical compound consisting of boron and hydrogen.

                          Structure of Diborane molecule

Diborane has four hydrogen atoms and that of two boron atoms on the same plane. In between these planes, there are two dividing atoms of hydrogen.

•The boron atom is sp³ hybridized posses four hybrid orbitals. Out of these four hybrid orbitals, three of the orbitals have one electron each, and of which one is an empty orbital.

• In each boron atom two electrons of hybrid orbital forms two  bonds with the 1s hydrogen atoms.

. Now, The borons two atoms left with each unpaired electron orbital and remaining empty orbital forms the two (B–H–B) bonds with two of the1s hydrogen atoms as the Banana bond.

•It is also known as the 3-center 2-electron (3c–2e) bond beacause here three atoms share two electrons.
