Explanation:

Drawbacks of Newland's law of octave:

Newland could arrange elements only up to calcium, out of the total 56 elements known.

After calcium, every eighth element did not possess properties similar to that of the first.

Only 56 elements were known at the time of Newlands, but later several elements were discovered.

  • DRAWBACKS OF LAW OF OCTAVES: Newland could arrange the atoms only up to calcium (ie. up to lighter elements)
  • He thought that only 56 elements existed in nature. but later many elements where discovered.
  • In order to fit existing elements in his table, newland placed two element in a same position which differed in properties. Ex: cobalt and nickel
  • The periodic table did not include inert gas as they were not discovered at that time
