The poor children have beautiful dreams, but ugly reality. The possibility of these dreams becoming true is very low. In the chapter Lost Spring Shaeb-e-Alam and Mukesh have dreams to become and own certain things. Saheb wants to own a pair of shoes and play tennis. Mukesh on the other hand wants to become a car mechanic.
However, the possibility of his dream becoming a reality is bleak. His circumstances are not encouraging. The grinding poverty of his family, nefarious nexus of middlemen, shahukars, corrupt policemen, bureaucrats and indifferent Government are apathetic to his dream. It appears his dream will remain a mere dream.
