Johnsy was downcast and she thought that she'd be gone as soon as the last leaf fell. She was not willing to live and had no hope to survive. But the last leaf never fell, since Behrman had painted it there. When she woke up in the morning and saw that the leaf was still there, she realised that it was not right of her to let go of her life. The last leaf had shown her how bad she had been by not falling even in strong winds. From then, she became strong willed, her confidence grew and she became better and better.

She realised that it wasn't good to give up and let go without even trying.
