During spermatogenesis, males produce 2 types of gametes- 50 % with X-chromosome and 50 % with Y-chromosome.

The specific composition after spermatogenesis is known as X factor or X body. In insects, the sex chromosomes comprise XX females and XO males. In this system, there is only one sex chromosome, referred to as X. Males possess only one X chromosome (XO), while females exhibit two (XX), the O signifies the absence of the second X.

The maternal gametes always comprise an X chromosome, so the sex of the offspring depends on whether a sex chromosome is found in the male gamete. Its sperm usually comprises either one X chromosome or no sex chromosome at all.

In a variant of this system, the majority of the individuals exhibit two sex chromosomes (XX) and are hermaphroditic, generating both sperm and eggs with which they can fertilize themselves, while the rare individuals are male and possess only one sex chromosome (CO). The model organism, that is, frequently used in biological research is Caenorhabditis elegans, a nematode.
