During a total lunar eclipse the moon is in the penumbra of the Earth. During a lunar eclipse, the moon takes a reddish colour due to this phase. A lunar eclipse basically occurs when the Moon passes directly behind Earth and the earth forms a shadow between them.
A lunar eclipse can occur only when the Sun, Earth, and Moon are exactly or very closely aligned, with Earth between the other two which resulted in the formation of the shadow which is seen from the earth as a lunar eclipse.
