Hello buddy..
1. The lungs always contain a residual volume of air so that during breathing cycle there is sufficient time for oxygen to be absorbed and for the carbon dioxide to be released.

2. Residual volume is important because it prevents the lungs from collapsing.

Hope it helps you buddy..

Residual air is the small volume of air that remains inside the lungs even after exhalation.

The presence of residual air in lungs constitutes benefits for the lungs such as

- The presence of residual air inside the lungs keeps it or protects it from collapsing after exhalation.

- Due to the presence of residual air inside the lungs, it stays ventilated until the next inhalation.
