During a collision, momentum remains constant.

  • There are two types of collisions that are elastic collision and inelastic collision.
  • In both types of collisions, linear momentum remains constant as it follows the law of conservation which states that the total momentum of a body is always constant.
  • When 2 bodies collide they exert forces on each other and by newton's third law of motion, equal and opposite force will be exerted on both bodies on each other which will give them momentum in opposite directions.
  • Hence total momentum of both bodies is constant.
