During electrolysis of molten compounds, metal is formed at   negative electrode because that is where the positive metal ions are attracted. the non-metal element is formed at the positive electrode where the negative non-metal ions are attracted.

Negatively-charged ions move to the positive electrode (anode ). They lose electrons and are oxidised . The substance that is broken down is called the electrolyte.
