During extreme winters waterbodies such as rivers and lakes freeze forming a lsyer of ice on thier top surface. how do fish and other aquatic animals survive under such conditions?

There can be two cases
1. The animal can move to other region which is comparatively warmer
2. They must have been adapted to it(since it is not first time they hAve been living here for so many years)
