Summary

A drainage system is the pattern formed by the streams, rivers, and lakes in a particular region.

A drainage basin is a region of land that is drained by a single river system.

Each drainage basin is separated topographically from the adjacent basins by a ridge, hill or mountain. This is known as a water divide.

The major river systems in India can be classified into:-

(i) The Himalayan Rivers

(ii) The Peninsular Rivers

Drainage systems depend on the topography and geology of the land:

The Indus, Ganges and Brahmaputra are the important north Indian rivers. The Narmada Tapti, Mahanadi, Krishna, Godavari, and Kauvery are the important peninsular rivers.

The Sundarbans delta is the largest mangrove forest in the world*

The Godavari is the largest of the Peninsular rivers.

Shivanasamudram Falls in kauvery river is the second biggest waterfall in India and the sixteenth largest in the world.

(i) The Wular lake in Jammu and Kashmir, is the result of tectonic activity. It is the largest freshwater lake in India.

(ii) The Sambhar lake in Rajasthan, is a salt water lake. Its water is used for producing salt.

(iii) The Chilika lake, the Pulicat lake (lagoon lake) and the Kolleru lake. Ox-bow lakes.

It is very important to protect the scarce water resources from being polluted.
