Two types of fermentations take place when 1 molecule of glucose is broken down to give energy.
1. Yeast breakes down 1 molecule of glucose ( in absence of O2 ) to give ethanol ( 2 carbon molecule ), CO2 and Two ATP molecules. This reaction is also called as alcoholic fermentation.
2. In our muscle cells if there is lack of oxygen 1 molecule of glucose is broken down into lactic acid ( 3 carbon molecule) and 2ATP molecules. Formation of lactic acid causes cramps in muscles.
In both the cases sufficient amount of oxygen is not available. Therefore 1 molecule of glucose gives only 2 ATP molecules instead of 38
