initial speed,u=40km/hr
final speed,v=20km/hr
Average speed=u+v/2
=40+20/2
=60/2
=30km/hr

How come ,Assume total distance is 400 km ,time in 1/2 journey=200/40=5 hrs,2nd half journey time=200/20=10 hrs,total time=5+10=15 hrs,avg speed=total distance/total time=400/15=80/3 km/hr.PLEASE CHECK YOUR ANSWER
Small solutions are not always good.avg speed is not equal to u+v/2 but =Total distance/total time.You may loose marks in exam if calculated like this,
