During maintenance of a machine assembly it is observed that the strengthening steel plate has

a through thickness central crack of critical size 62 mm and advised to replace with a new plate.

During NDT testing of new plate before replacement it is noted that, it has a single edge

through thickness crack of 34 mm length. Determine is this a safe replacement, if not provide

your suggestion for safe design. Assume the plate to be of large length having a cross section of

110 x 20 mm and carrying a load of 175 kN. Assume Geometry constant, f(α), for centre

cracked plate and edge cracked plate may be 1 and 1.12 respectively. Also determine effective

crack length (E= 200 Gpa, yield strength of material 328 Mpa)
