Women's emancipation is absolutely necessary for the development and progress of any society. Yet, in spite of women entering the highest institutions of learning and attaining economic independence today, the glass ceiling appears to remain in place due to the dominance of men.

Surprisingly, in Europe and America too women even earned the basic right to exercise their adult franchise in the early part of the twentieth century. But, western societies have since marched ahead and have been able to bridge the gulf between men and women.

The situation in our rural areas and among the middle to lower strata of our society ought to improve in order for us to progress as a society. To begin with, the mother in the family must have an equal say in the running of the house; secondly, the girls must be educated as much as the boys; thirdly, marital discords must be ironed out without violence and so on. If we can do these little things in our homes, our outlook towards our women will automatically change and we would be able to transform our society.
