The withdrawal of US troops was signed by George W Bush in 2008. When Obama came to power, he began withdrawing troops and all US troops vacated Iraq by the end of 2011.

However, with ISIS gaining stronghold in Iraq, US troops returned again in 2014.

The combat troops left Afghanistan by the end of 2014.
