During prolonged fasting, the first compound that is used up is all the carbohydrates. Carbohydrates are said to give all the instant energy to the body. Carbs break down into simpler components in our body and provide energy first when body senses the need of energy.

Fats are broken down next. Fats get converted into substances which can be used by the body. So it is usually observed that a person who is fasting gradually loses all his/ her flab present under the skin.

As protein is the most essential compound of our body, it is given the last preference of being broken down to produce energy. The proteins in our muscles start degrading if the fast is continued for a very long period of time. Thus, it is not advised to fast if your muscles have started becoming weaker.
