Laboratory thermometer consists of a thick walled fine bore glass capillary tube. It has a small thin bulb at its lower end and it is filled with pure /dry Hg or colored alcohol. The portion of the capillary tube above the bulb is commonly called stem.

The precautions needed while reading a laboratory thermometer are:

It should be kept upright not tilted.

Bulb should be surrounded from all sides by the substance of which the temperature is to be measured.

The bulb should not touch the surface of the container.
