Each designated area in the above map represents a Federal Reserve Bank district. In constructing the Federal Reserve System, the States divided itself into 12 Districts geographically.
Every bank from these districts incorporated to reserve bank separately. The idea of District boundaries was based on the current trade regions which existed back in 1913 and economic considerations; this was done so that they don’t necessarily coincide with the state lines.
