Dodgems are powered by electric motors, and as you may know all electric devices require a complete circuit in order to operate.
In the case of dodgems, the power supply is not situated on the vehicle itself but externally. The dodgems then use an antenna to connect to the electrically connected ceiling, then the dodgem is also electrically connected to the floor.
In mains electric (which is AC), there are two wires known as live and neutral. One of these would be connected to the ceiling and the other to the floor.
Onboard the dodgem there is also a throttle switch which is typically on/off, but more advanced models may feature a progressive throttle.
Dodgems are very simple electronically, the only interesting part is the use of the brushes on an antenna to make a sliding electrical connection.
