Each side of a square flower bed is 2m 80cm long. It is extended by digging a strip 30cm wide all around
it. Find
(I
)the area of the enlarged flower bed.
(ii) the increase in the area of the flower bed.​

Answer:

Lenth of side of flower bed = 2m 80cm

Lenth of side of strip = 30cm

∴ Increased length of side = 2m 80cm + 30cm (Can also be written as 2.80m + 0.30m)

= 3m 1cm (Or 3.01m)

I) Area of a square = side × side

∴ Area of enlargened flower bed = 3m 1cm × 3m 1cm (Can also be written as 3.01m × 3.01m)

= 906m 1cm (Or 906.01m)  

II) Increase in area = Enlargened area - Original area

∵ Original area = 2m 80cm × 2m 80cm (Can also be written as 2.80m×2.80m)

= 7m 84cm

∴ Increase in area = 906m 1cm - 7m 84cm (Can also be written as 906.01m - 7.84m)

= 898m 17cm
