New side of the flower bed= 3.8+0.5m=4.3m
Area of the large flower bed=side*side
=4.3*4.3
=18.49 square m
Increase in area= area of large flower bed - area of the original flower bed
=18.49-(3.8*3.8)
=18.49-14.44
4.05 square m
