The World Health Day was first celebrated on 7th April 1950, to mark the anniversary of the World Health Organization. When the First World Health Assembly met in Geneva in 1948, the need to have a special day dedicated to health issues was felt. Therefore a day was fixed as World Health Day.

This day is observed each year. Since the WHO has an international presence, the governments of many nations actively participate in making this day a success. The main aim is to zero in onto a health matter and spread awareness about it. The activities include conducting workshops, seminars, launching governmental initiatives, free check-up camps, besides others.

The theme of the World Health Day varies. The WHO has, in the past focused on ailments like diabetes, depression, oral health, while this year’s theme is Universal Health Care. The aim is to ensure that all individuals have access to at least the basic healthcare facilities.
