Answer:
Though the Earth's surface has around 71% percent water, we still face water shortage because most of the water available is in oceans. This water is salty and cannot be used for our daily activities directly.
Explanation:
Water covers 70% of our planet and it is easy to think that there is always a lot of it. However, fresh water—the stuff we drink, bathe in, and water our fields in—is incredibly rare. Only 3% of the world's water is fresh water, and two-thirds of it is frozen inside glaciers or otherwise inaccessible to us.
As a result, approximately 1.1 billion people worldwide do not have access to water, and a total of 2.7 billion people experience water shortages at least one month a year. Inadequate sanitation is also a problem for 2.4 billion people, putting them at risk of diseases such as cholera and typhoid and other waterborne diseases. Diarrhea alone kills two million people every year, mostly children.
Many water systems that keep ecosystems thriving and feed growing populations are under stress. Rivers, lakes and bodies of water are drying up or are too polluted to use. More than half of the world's wetlands have disappeared. Agriculture uses more water than any other source and wastes much of it through inefficiency. Climate change is changing weather conditions and water conditions around the world, causing shortages and droughts in some places and floods in others.
At the current level of consumption, the situation will only get worse. By 2025, two-thirds of the world's population may face water shortages. And ecosystems around the world will suffer even more.
