Reading is my hobby.  Whenever I find some vacant hours. I get hold of a book to read.  Reading gives me a lot of pleasures. Books delight and educate at the same time.  They introduce a person to the best of minds of the past and prove to be a very good company in weal or woe.  Robert Southey writes about books:

“My never failing friends are they

With who I converse day by day.

With them I take delight in weal

                And seek relief in woe.”

I like to read books on all subjects but books on philosophy give me the greatest pleasure.  They make me think and give me a particular type of comfort and delight.  Of the various books that I have been reading the Bhagvad Gita has impressed me the most.  It is my favourite book.

The Bhagvad Gita is full of some rare gems of wisdom.  It conveys the message of Lord Krishana, the greatest of the philosophers.  It is an excellent treatise on man, his position in this universe, his soul, his duty and role in life.  In tells us that soul is deathless.  It is body alone that dies.  Death is only a change of clothes. There is no reason for a man to be afraid of death.  It is this message that has always inspired great martyrs of the world to lay down their lives for a noble cause. The Gita also gives us a message of universal brotherhood.  Life, according to the Gita, is only a manifestation of the Divine.  All human beings are nothing but material abodes of the same spirit, the greater soul.  Bodies may differ but the soul is the same.  It is the same soul that pervades us all.  The Gita also tells us that a man should go on doing his duty without worrying about the results. One should do one’s duty and leave the results to God.   Prizes or punishments are pre-ordained.  God is the supreme judge and we should submit humbly to His will.  One should try to remain happy and calm in all circumstances. Things are not what they seem to be.  Man knows very little.  He does not know even a faction of the reality.  HE should, therefore, have faith in God and go on doing his duty. He should play his destined part with a sense of devotion.

All this has been a great source of inspiration to me in my life.  Whenever I am upset or in trouble, I seek refuge in the Gita and find solace and a healing touch.  Lord Krishana Himself appears to be speaking to me in person and I find myself elevated to a different universe.  It is this book that has sustained me through the various ups and downs in my life.  That I why I love and adore it.

I have read a lot of books. They appear to me in different ways. But the book that. I like best is “Letters from a father to his daughter”. The late Jawaharlal is the author of this book. This is a series of letters written by Nehru to his nine years old daughter Indira. This is a very interesting and instructive book. This is a book of lasting value no doubt. So, this book has been many times, approved as a Rapid Reader for the school and the college student.

The book deals with the birth and development of the animal world. This book deals with the birth and development of the human civilization. They are written in right order. There are thirty chapters in all in this little book. There are fourteen pictures in this book, these pictures are of some fossil fishes, extinct animals, tells of the New Stone age and the old stone age, houses built in a lake, picture writing, the Great wall of China and the ruins in Egypt. The author has given very good pieces of advice too, here and there in this book. Hence, this is a very useful book for the students. It is written in English.

This book appeals to me to a great extent, because the language is very simple and easy to understand. The matter is presented in a very clear and lucid manner. The description is lively. It is not complicated. The complex ideas have been simplified. This is a book of history, geography, natural science and philosophy. It is full of general knowledge about our past.

I hope it will help you...
