National Mathematics Day
The Indian government declared 22 December to be National Mathematics Day. This was announced by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on 26 February 2012 at Madras University,to mark the 125th anniversary of the birth of the Indian mathematician SRINIVASA RAMANUJAN). On this occasion Singh also announced that 2012 would be celebrated as the National Mathematics Year.
Ramanujan was born in 1887 and died at the age of 32. He independently discovered nearly 3,900 results (mostly identities and equations) during his short life. Most of his discoveries were (mostly identities and equations) thoroughly novel and proven highly unconventional results. Ramanujan's discoveries including Ramanujan prime, Ramanujan theta function, partition formula and mock theta functions have opened new areas of work and inspired for further research. Recently, all his claims have been proven correct.
To enhance the significance of this special day, here are some quotes by the man of honour Srinivasa Ramanujan that show his love and passion towards Mathematics :–
"An equation for me has no meaning, unless it expresses a thought of God."
"To preserve my brains I want food and this is now my first consideration. Any sympathetic letter from you will be helpful to me here to get a scholarship."
Since then, India's National Mathematics Day is celebrated every 22 December with numerous educational events held at schools and universities throughout the country
