Ecosystem is a “functional unit of nature” where ‘organisms interact among themselves’ and with their ‘surrounding physical environment to sustain each other’.

Ecosystem follows a pattern of stratification depending on the ‘biotic’ and ‘abiotic’ components and their functions at each level. Production, decomposition, energy flow, and nutrient cycling are the main features of a functioning ecosystem.

Grassland, freshwater, marine, forest, desert are examples of types of ecosystems that are self-sustainable with the division of functions within the comprising biotic and abiotic components.
