Edla is kind and understanding. She realised that the peddler is hiding something and she reassured him that they can leave their house as freely as he is entering. Although she feels right a way that the peddler is an educated man. She still handle him nicely with kindness and looked after him as if he is a real captain.

Her sympthatic nature and respect for others transformed the peddler. Thus, when he left, he returned thirty kronors he had stolen from the crofter with a note thanking Edla for having been so nice to him and for treating him like a real captain. Her trust and kindness help the peddler to stay clear of the trap. He mightvhave been caught otherwise.
