Impact of Cyclone Fani on Agriculture and Farmers

India’s capital of natural disasters, ‘Odisha’ faced another damage in the last week. According to the news in the latest bulletin of Indian Meteorological Department, Fani the disastrous natural calamity was supposed to first hit the Indian state Tamil Nadu by April 30. However, it surprisingly visited Odisha in the first week of May, causing immense tragedy. After sensing the severity of the cyclone, the Central Government already announced INR 1,086 crore to four target states including Odisha.

Fani has destroyed the whole state especially, Puri with its wind speed of 175 Km/hour. Till now a total of 11 people has been found dead. Cyclone Fani has caused the largest landfall in Odisha coast, it has almost destroyed the local and marine ecology. The tidal surge caused by Cyclone will increase the salinity of Chilika, the largest brackish water lake in Odisha. It will result in affecting the marine life of the state and the country. Speaking about ecology, the agriculture and thereby farming will be hard hit by this natural disaster. Odisha is ideal for Rice, Oilseeds, Pulses, Mesta, Tea and Shrimp farming.

As Fani has its spread over Khurda, Puri, and Ganjam districts, it will take over the Chilika Lake causing to end the income source of more than 200000 people who earn their living based on fishing in this lake. Shrimp farmers in Odisha will be hard hit by this cyclone as it may have overwhelmed the ponds and washed off all the shrimps. Also, As earlier said Odisha is a state of natural disasters it is recently hit by the post-monsoon cyclone Title in 2018 and prior to that cyclone Phailin have destroyed the state and the lands. The lands were recovering from the previous cyclone effects and now the state is again hit by another one, resulting in making the land unfit for cultivation. This is not a good scenario, as it will affect the regional livelihood and will leave the traces to affect the country’s economy and agriculture.

The cyclone may also have affected the spotted deers and other animals of Balukhand Wildlife Sanctuary, as it is located between Puri and other major hit areas. We as a citizen of India should help and pray for each other. Those who are broken or affected are staying in nearby villages. Manycyclones hit regions are still without electricity. The Fani is the 13th pre-monsoon cyclone to hit Odisha after 1804.

Our government and all citizens are helping the survivors in different ways. Here is a little advice from Khetigaadi as how to take care of your expensive farming machinery as well as how to use them in precautionary efforts. Cyclone causes major landfall and thus results in flooding the area. Keeping your machinery in water may lead to erosion. To avoid this, farmers can maintain their tractors effectively from the point they start using them, oiling your agricultural machinery will help reduce the risk of erosion. Keeping an eye on weather news and reports especially by the farmers living in coastal areas as they know they are prone to these kinds of situations. While doing these precautionary efforts prior to this kind of natural disaster, do not forget that you have your precious farming equipment and tractors to rescue you. You can use them to store crops, machines, and even relocate. Tractors will help you to move or transport heavy materials such as crop seedlings, other tractor implements, etc. a safer place for a while with your family.
