Answer:

The advent of nanotechnology marked an era of another revolution in human history which was accepted with much fanfare. It found application in almost every imaginable area of science from space technology to agriculture. Rampant usage of nanoparticles across sectors has ensured that a portion of which is leached to the environment especially via water and soil. Apart from these, naturally occurring nanoparticles have always found its way to soil and water, thus ending up interacting with the living entities. Some of which have been extensively studied especially on plants but despite these efforts, we are still clueless about the different effects the same nanoparticles have on different plants. The concept of bioaccumulation is a serious issue, and this might have detrimental effects.

Initial hype focussed on the miracles of nanotechnology enumerating the vistas it was opening which was not possible earlier. Mixed views were received upon their usage due to their ambiguous effects on plants. Of late, it is getting clearer that the effects seem to be positively correlated to the concentration used and few other factors. More wide-scale studies need to be undertaken to get a better picture. The recent advent of omics studies had shed light on various aspects of the living being which if applied to the study of nanoparticle may be a great tool to gauge the impact. This chapter charts the nanoparticle-plant interaction, its impact on various aspects of growth and development and its applications.
