Vardhaman Mahavir was born in 599 B.C. (540 B.C.) according to some) in a Jnatrika family near Vaisali in Magadha. His father was king Chetaka and Mother, Trisala. His original name was Vardhaman. In due course of time he became famous as Mahavir. From the Jaina texts it is also known that he was called “Nataputra’, ‘Kasava’ and ‘Veshaliya
Marriage
With growing age Mahavir was married to Yosada and had a daughter from her name Priyadarshini. Yet he could not confined himself to this worldly life. He did not like to take the charge of administration. Always he was in contemplative mood. The worldly pleasure could not satisfy him.
Life as medicant:
Mahavir left home and wondered naked in many places of India. He resorted to heavy penance. His hairs and nails grew. He never brushed his teeth. People even sat dog at him which cut his body but he did not take any medicine. He moved from place to place in search of true knowledge

Attainment of knowledge:
Mahavir meditated and attained true knowledge on the river bank of Rijjupalika and was known as Nirgrantha’ or ‘Jina’. He was also known as Nirgrantha’. Further, he decided to preach this knowledge among the people of India.
Preaching of Jainism and death:
Mahavir first went to Rajagriha, the ancient capital of Magadha. There he converted eleven Brahmins into Jainism. King Ajatasatru of Magadha accepted Jainism. Mahavir preached Jainism in different places like Magadha, Avanti, Vaishali, Anga, Mithila, Sravasti and many other places and breathed his life in 526 B.C. (or486B.C.)at Pava.
Teachings of Mahavir:
Mahavir preached Jainism in different parts of India. His teachings were simple. The common people could understand his teachings well.
Triratna:
Mahavir put emphasis on a pure and regulated life. For attaining that live he advocated the principle of Triratna (Three Jewells). Those are Right Faith, Right Knowledge and Right Conduct. The practice of all these three faith leads to salvation.
