Effective methods of reuse|recycle of generated waste in China:

China being the most populous country in the world faces much waste management issues. Here are few effective methods that China has implemented to recycle or reuse its waste:

Recycling Vending Machines

These vending machines pay subway credits to the individuals in exchange for returned containers. This measure was taken to fulfill the dual purpose:

  • To reduce the environmental impact caused by informal or illegal bottle collection business .
  • To improve the profits of the operators who follow proper standards and regulation in this industry.

Disposable Chopsticks

These disposable chopsticks are made from bamboo or scraps obtained from flooring and furniture factories. They are made using automatic cutting machines specially made for their creation. They are used locally as well as exported (mostly to Japan).

Though they are made of biodegradable material, but China is encouraging use of reusable chopsticks.

Banning Plastic Bags

In order to reduce pollution and various problems caused by plastic waste, the Chinese government has banned the plastic bags in January 2008. Government is encouraging shop keepers and customers to use basket and cloth bags instead of plastic ones.

Human Fertilizer in China

China also uses human excrement (“night soil”) as fertilizers.  Human waste is collected from outhouse and then used as fertilizer. In a rural setting, these outhouses are generally located near the pig sites, this ensure that waste can be collected from both sources to be used as fertilizers.
