Environmental degradation is one of the ten threats officially cautioned by the High-level Panel on Threats, Challenges and Change of the United Nations. The United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Reduction defines environmental degradation as "the reduction of the capacity of the environment to meet social and ecological objectives, and needs". Environmental degradation comes in many types. When natural habitats are destroyed or natural resources are depleted, the environment is degraded. Efforts to counteract this problem include environmental protection and environmental resources management.

Efforts that can be made to avoid degradation of environment are:

● Control over pollution: Pollution is the major cause for environment degradation and it should be kept under check. Air, Land and water pollution mainly are the main cause for pollution. Pollution is effecting our environment not only through a single aspect but from various aspects and is degrading every component of the environment.

● Strict Application of Environment Protection Act : Various measures or the rules and regulations suggested in the Environmental Protection Act should be applied and followed strictly in order maintain the environmental balance.

● Population Control : Increasing population is also a cause for environmental degradation and it should be kept in check. With the increase in population the demand for resources also increases and the pressure on environment then leads to environmental degradation.
