Answers
Given:
Eight small buckets and three large buckets of water make 30 litres.
Five small buckets and nine large buckets of water make 33 litres.
To find:
How much water can each bucket hold?
Solution:
Let's assume,
"x" → represents the capacity of each of the small buckets
"y" → represents the capacity of the large buckets
According to the question, we can form two linear equations which are as follows:
Equation 1:- 8x + 3y = 30
and
Equation 2:- 5x + 9y = 33
On multiplying eq. 1 throughout by 3, we get
8x + 3y = 30 ] × 3
⇒ 24x + 9y = 90 ..... [Equation (3)]
Now, subtracting equation (2) from equation (3), we get
24x + 9y = 90
5x + 9y = 33
- - -
---------------------
19x = 57
---------------------
∴ x = = 3
On substituting the value of x in eq. (1), we get
(8 × 3) + 3y = 30
⇒ 24 + 3y = 30
⇒ 3y = 30 - 24
⇒ 3y = 6
⇒ y = 2
Thus,
Each of the small buckets can hold 3 litres of water.
and
Each of the large buckets can hold 2 litres of water.
