An amount earns simple interest in 3 years to ₹ 944. If the rate of interest was increased by 25%, then the same amount would have become ₹ 980 at the same time, then how much was this amount (principal)?

We know,

As per the first situation in the question, we get

A = Rs. 944

P = sum of money

R = rate

T = 3 years

∴ $A- P = \frac{P\times R\times T}{100}$

$\implies 944- P = \frac{P\times R\times 3}{100}$

$\implies 100(944- P) = 3PR$

$\implies 94400- 100P = 3PR$

$\implies 100P + 3PR = 94400$ . . . Equation 1

As per the second situation in the question, we get

A = Rs. 980

P = sum of money

R = $R + \frac{25}{100}R = \frac{125R}{100} = \frac{5R}{4}\%$

T = 3 years

∴ $980- P = \frac{P\times \frac{5R}{4} \times 3}{100}$

$\implies 980- P = \frac{P\times5R \times 3}{400}$

$\implies 400(980 - P) = 15PR$

$\implies 392000- 400P = 15PR$

$\implies 400P + 15PR = 392000$

$\implies 80P + 3PR = 78400$ . . . Equation 2

On subtracting equation 2 from equation 1, we get

100P + 3PR = 94400

80P + 3PR = 78400

20P = 16000

-------------------------------

∴ $P = \frac{16000}{20} = \bold{Rs. 800 }$

Thus, the principal was → Rs. 800.
