Given:

A shopkeeper sold 2 bicycles for Rs. 1100 per cycle

On one he made a profit of 10% and on the other a loss of 20%.

To find:

(i) Tell him whether he gained or not?

(ii) Find the profit or loss in percentage?

Solution:

The S.P. of each bicycle = Rs. 1100

∴ The total S.P. of 2 bicycles are = 2 × 1100 = Rs. 2200

It is given that the shopkeeper makes a 10% profit by selling one bicycle and a 20% loss by selling the other one.

∴  The total C.P. of the 2 bicycles are,

= $[1100 \times \frac{100}{100+10} ] + [1100 \times \frac{100}{100-20}]$

= $[1100 \times \frac{100}{110} ] + [1100 \times \frac{100}{80}]$

= $1000 + 1375$

= $Rs. \:2375$

(i). Finding whether the shopkeeper gained or not:

We got,

Total S.P. = Rs. 2200

Total C.P. = Rs. 2375

∵ Total C.P. > Total S.P.

∴ The shopkeeper made a loss in the overall transaction

(ii). Finding the loss percentage:

∴ Loss percentage is,

= $\frac{C.P. - S.P. }{C.P. } \times 100$

= $\frac{2375 - 2200}{2375}\times 100$

= $\frac{175}{2375}\times 100$

= $\frac{17500}{2375}$

= $\bold{7.36\%}$

Thus, the overall loss percentage is 7.36%.
