Porpagation of sound:-

The sound needs a material medium to travel. The travelling of light in the form of vibrations through any material medium is known as the propagation of sound.The sound can easily travel in all the states of matter including solids, liquids and gases.

The speed of sound is highest in solids because the molecules are very close to each other and is lowest in the gases because of great distance in the molecules of air.

Sound moves through a material medium from the source to the listener.When an object vibrate it vibrates the particle of surroundings but particle do not move from the vibrating object through the ear.

As a result adjacent particles get displaced from its position of rest and then particles comes back to its original position.This process continues in the medium till the sound reaches to the ear.

We observe that sound travels in the wave form in the material medium that's why they are mechanical waves.
