Tribals in the upper reaches of himalayas understood the importance of trees and stood against the greedy contractors who came to cut the trees . Then it gave rise to the chipko movement. This movement became very famous and planting trees became a regular practice for many of  the people in the region and it was then named as 'van mahotsava'.
