Why are elections important in a democracy?

Originally Answered: Why do election becomes necessary in a democracy?

If elections are not held , whoever is ruling may become autocratic and despotic.

Even if the ruler is compassionate, he will not have the first hand situation of the country. The needs of the people are not brought to his notice.

We are seeing this tendency even in democracy where a party gets huge mandate such as in WB and Delhi. Mamata is not able to tolerate any critism or dissent, so also with Kejriwall who drove out even the founder members who were like two pillars of the party. Such a situation is sure to happen in an autocratic rule. We find it in North Korea.

If elections are held periodically, the heads of the government will keep themselves abreast of the development or deterioration of the economy. Corrective action can be taken. In an autocratic rule, there is no scope for critisism or dissent. Hence the actual situation will not be known by the ruler.

In an autocracy there will be more sycophants who will only please the leadership, covering the reality, as it happened during emergency.

Periodic election will incentivice the people as well as the leaders.
