1. Leadership Alternative - Elections offer voters the opportunity to choose their leaders. They do this by opting for the candidate or party whose views they appeal to, this ensures that the needs of the people are reflected in the election results.
2. Change in leadership - Elections are also a platform for the general public to express their hostility towards a ruling party. By voting for alternative parties and electing a special government, citizens demonstrate that they have ultimate authority.
3. Political Participation - Elections open the door for new issues that can be brought into the government notice. If a citizen/politician wishes to introduce reforms that do not appear to be on either party's agenda, he or she is free to stand for election separately or to set up a substitute party.
4. Self-correcting system - Since elections are an exercise held every term of time (i.e., every 5 year), the ruling parties are under constant scrutiny and created to look at public tensions.This works as a self-correcting system, with political parties reviewing their performance and trying to satisfy voters.
