Explanation:
The process of decomposition of an electrolyte with the help of electricity is called electrolysis.
Pure water is a non-conductor of electricity.
Before electrolysis,it is made conducting by adding a small quantity of an alkali(eg.sodium hydroxide) or an acid (eg.sulphuric acid)
water upon electrolysis produces hydrogen at cathode and oxygen at anode.
From electrolysis it concluded that water is made of hydrogen and oxygen combined in the ratio 2:1 by volume or 1:8 by mass.
electrolysis of water can be described by
2H2o----electricity------->2H2(g) + O2(g)
acidulated
or faintly
