To refine copper slab of impure copper serves as anode (positive electrode), while a pure copper sheets serves as the cathode ( negative electrode). The electrolyte used is copper sulphate solution(cuSo4).

During electrolysis, the positive charge copper and get separated from the impure slab at the Anode and are deposited on the pure copper sheet at cathode .Impurities settle at the bottom of the container .The pure copper sheet increase in thickness and is removed.

In order to refine copper, impure copper is taken as anode and pure copper strips are taken as cathode.

The electrolyte is an acidified solution of copper sulphate.

As a result of electrolysis copper in pure form is transferred from anode to cathode.

The suitable impurities go into the solution.

Whereas insoluble impurities from the blister copper deposited at the bottom of anode as anode mud.
