answer : Electron density in yz plane of 3dx2-y2 orbital is 0.5

explanation : lobes of d_{x^2-y^2} orbital are along x-axis and y - axis. so, probability of finding electron density along yz plane of 3d_{x^2-y^2} = (a + a)/(4a) = 1/2 = 0.5

[ see figure here a represents each spherical part of orbital. here it is clear that two spheres are available in yz plane. and total number of spheres of given orbital = 4.

probability = 2a/4a = 0.5]

we know, d orbital have five significant geometrical shapes. these are d_{xy}, d_{yz}, d_{zx} , d_{x^2-y^2} and d_{z^2}.

Electron density in yz plane of 3dx2-y2 orbital is zero.

  • As we know that the energy level can be defined by the principal quantum number and for the shape it depends on the azimuthal quantum number.

  • There are 4 orbitals are present and each one of them have their own specific orientation. So, for the d orbital have five orientation which are 3dxy , 3dyz,3dzx , 3dx²-y², 3dz² ( it is the mixed orbital).

  • So ,in the 3dx²-y² the electron density is present in the lobe of x and y axis which means the electron density will be nill in the y and z direction that's why Electron density in yz plane of 3dx2-y2 orbital is zero.
