The sodium (Na) atom transfers oneelectron to the chlorine (Cl) atom, in order to attain complete octet . With the transfer of the electron, however, they become electrically charged, and combine into salts through theformation of ionic bonds.

NaCl forms ionic bond. Chlorine has 7 electrons in its last orbit. it only needs one more to complete 8. So it takes a full electron from sodium, who has only 1 electron in last orbit. Sodium wants to give that electron , so that it can complete 8 electron in its last orbit too.
