Given:

Element A has valency 4 and element B has valency 3.

To find:

Formula of the compound formed by A and B.

Solution:

We shall use criss-cross method to calculate the molecular formula of the compound formed by A and B.

A(4) \:  \:  \:  \:  \: B(3)

\setlength{\unitlength}{1cm}\begin{picture}(6,6)\put(0,5){\vector(1,-1){1.5}}\put(2,5){\vector(-1,-1){1.5}}\end{picture}

 \rightarrow \:  A_{3}B_{4}

Steps followed in this method:

  • First write the atoms with corresponding valencies in bracket.

  • Then criss-cross the valencies to the opposite atom using arrows.

  • Then write the required formula in its simplest whole number form.

Hope It Helps.
