Elemental composition of butyric acid was found to be 52.4 % C, 9.2%
H and 36.6 % 0. Determine its empirical formula.​

52.4/12=4.366

9.2/1=9.2

36.6/16=2.287

  • now divide this with least number I.e. 2.287 to simplify the ratio to find the empirical formula
  • 4.366/2.287=1.9(C)
  • 9.2/2.287=4(H)
  • 2.287/2.287=1(O)
  • empirical formula is C2H4O
