I belive pauline is the answer.

Pauline is the one who lives furthest up the hill, followed by Emma due to the last statement then jane comes up the last but that does not mean that jane lives at the lowest part of the hill, it only means that jane in the above three variables is the last from the foot of the mountain and Pauline is the first in relation to the top of the hill.
